The corncrake is a special bird of wet meadows which is in decline in Western Europe, and in the 1990-s it was listed as Endangered by IUCN. More research in Eastern Europe revealed strong populations and it was downlisted. However, the corncrake remains a rare bird in Romania.

The Csík basin has quite a lot of wet meadows and a relatively high number of corncrakes (estimated to around 100 singing males). It's a special experience to walk after singing males in the high wet grass in June to map them.
